SOLAS – Finishing Project & Downloadable Resource

Last weekend I finished my third and final weekend of my Artist In Residency at Saddleback Church down in Orange County, CA. I was commissioned to image the Five “Solas” of the Reformation… this being the 500th anniversary and all. It was a fun project and I was thankful for the opportunity to work with all the fantastic artists from the Saddleback Visual Arts Community.

Many of you have asked if you can use these images for your celebrations of this 500th year… so I put together a downloadable package that I think is reasonable for any budget. If it’s not… email me and we can work something out. But CLICK HERE if you’d like to download these images for use.

2017 Artist In Residency – Saddleback Church

I’ll be an Artist in Residence at Saddleback Church this year. Along with teaching and supporting the artist community there, I will also be designing and completing 5 murals based on this years 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Each mural will depict a core belief that has influenced the Protestant tradition.

Last week I spent four days with the artist community and it was all the rads. So stoked how our first painting turned out!

Creative Direction for Jeff Bethke Videos

discussing the day with director Travis Hawkins

A couple of weeks ago I got to see my crazy ideas come to life.

I’ve done a few videos with internet celebrity Jefferson Bethke over the last year. Jeff is a super guy and I’ve been honored at any invitation to partner with him.

After the release of his book, LifeWay wanted to create a series of videos to go along with a devotional they are putting at the end of the year. Jeff wanted more than just talking head videos… so he asked me if I could come up with artistic representations of the themes he would be speaking on. I pitched them some ideas… some of which I knew would be risky to pull off… but they were stoked on the ideas.

So we spent a week together putting these ideas together. And I can’t tell you how awesome it felt to see them all happen the way I had imagined them in my head. Eric Chapman (part of the crew) sent me some pics from that time and I share them with you.

DIY Thrift Store Art

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

There is a Goodwill by my studio that always has killer landscape paintings.

And when I say killer, I mean the ones you find in your grandmas attic. The ones ripe with old time Bob Ross nostalgia. The ones you kind of love but you would never really put them up in your house.

I’ve done a series of thrift store paintings in the past where I painted various additions to the scenes – from tree houses to submarines – but most people who don’t paint feel a bit inadequate to accomplish such results. So I thought about what could be an awesome alternative, and I realized that everyone can lay some tape down and dab paint.

OCC Mural

Recently I was commissioned by Overlake Christian Church in Redmond, WA to create a mural illuminating their new Blessing My City campaign.

Originally we agreed on three 7ft tall by 5ft wide canvas’… each depicting a concept of their campaign:

1. Caring for your parish – not only the church but the parish of your home in a neighborhood.

2. Voice for the Voiceless – assisting with educational needs worldwide.

3. Sacred Space – the journey together towards a redeeming God.

For logistical reasons, I broke up the sections into two images each. This gave me two pictures to help me speak to the layered concepts. Because of my schedule I had about 5 days to make all these and I think they turned out great considering the time crunch.

You can see the paintings in the lobby as you enter the church.

Pittsburgh – a recap

Oh Pittsburgh. I love you. Even when you are in the 20’s and snowing all week.

Guys…. so much happened in 6 days that it would be dumb for me to write it all down. So maybe I’ll just list the things I loved this time around.
